Hanoi is an absolute paradise for visiting food lovers, but what lunch dish is the biggest hit with locals? One overwhelming favourite is Bun Cha, which can be found all over the city, just follow your nose!
The dish centres around grilled patties of seasoned pork, marinated and cooked over charcoal fires along with grilled pork belly. At Bun Cha 34, our restaurant of choice, the addition of local herbs during the cooking process adds extra aromas to the meats.
Once caramelised, it’s served in sweet, tangy sauce and topped with green papaya and carrot. Alongside this, a plate of white rice noodles and a customary mountain of fresh local herbs that, a staple of almost every Vietnamese meal. Optional spring rolls are strongly advised.
Tourists and locals wrestle for elbow space in this popular lunch spot and it’s easy to see why. There is something absolutely irresistible about the smoky aromas that seem to draw you in from the street. In fact, we’d go as far to say this might be our favourite dish of the trip so far!
