While Pho is undoubtedly the most notorious dish in Hanoi, the city has quite literally mountains of other noodles to enjoy. Today we were in search of Bún Bò, or ‘beef noodles’, a southern style dish that is widely popular in the capital.
There is nothing fancy about Bun Bo Nam Bo, a street food restaurant that has become incredibly popular with locals and tourists alike. It’s minimal interior and 4 item menu appealed to us even before we sampled the food, with the bún bò itself costing 60,000 Dong per bowl.
Luckily the food arrived quickly, because the smell was intoxicating! The stir-fried beef is cooked with lemongrass and spices, before being placed on a generous serving of vermicelli noodles with fresh herbs and greens. This is topped with fried garlic and shallots, ground peanuts, plus pickled green papaya and carrot for texture.
Mix together with the amazing sauce at bottom of the bowl, and add optional chilli for an overload of flavour. An absolute must-try in Hanoi!
IN SHORT – While its price might be slightly higher than other offerings of bún bò, the huge portion size and amazing flavours make this the best version we have tried to date.
