If there was only one place to eat everyday in Luang Prabang, this would be it! We are not ashamed to say that we went here twice in 2 days, purely because it allowed us to taste 6 dishes! Like a lot of local places, the kitchen is literally shared with the family home. From our seats, we could see the grandpa watching table tennis on TV.
The eclectic menu, full of typical Asian dishes and more regional ones, made it very hard for us to choose. After 15 minutes of head scratching, we opted for Phad Kee Mao, Fresh Spring Rolls and Lao Chicken Curry on our first visit, followed by Fried Sukiyaki, Bo Bun and Luang Praban Sausage on the second.
It’s easy to see why this place is so popular, all the dishes were literally packed with flavour and very reasonably priced, ranging from 17,000-30,000 Kip. Restaurants/cafes in Luang Prabang are known to be slightly more expensive, perhaps due to it’s UNESCO status and strong French ‘café culture’, so the Phonhueang cafe was a much needed break for our wallets (and a pleasure for our palates).
IN SHORT – You don’t have to spend a fortune for an exceptional lunch in Luang Prabang, and this place proves it!
