We were back in Chiang Mai to explore the great coffee shops and restaurants around Nimmanhaemin Road and the university district.
Cherng Doi is most famous for its kai yang, a mouth-watering grilled chicken dish served with a tamarind dipping sauce. If that doesn’t sound enticing enough, the meal is just 80 baht with sticky rice.
The meat tasted as good as it looked – amazingly tender and juicy with perfectly crisp skin. What really made the meal though was the outrageous flavour of the sweet, aromatic and slightly spicy tamarind sauce. Seriously, if heaven were a sauce, this would be it.
Sipping an ice cold Leo beer in the picturesque garden, it was hard to imagine a better lunch than this.
IN SHORT – Cherng Doi’s version of kai yang is pretty much perfection and definitely worth going the extra distance from the center of Chiang Mai.
